Introduce the idea of finding e-pals on the internet and ask students if they've got one or if they have ever thought of having one. Which country would they like an e-pal from? What kind of information could they write about themselves? (e.g. family, home, school, hobbies and interests). Make a list on the board.
Travel & holidays.
In this task, students have to select five missing sentences from a choice of eight different options to fill the gaps in a longer text. Before students try to answer this task, they should look at the title and read through the text ignoring the gaps, to make sure they understand what it is about generally. Encourage them to think about what kind of information they might expect to find in the gap. Remind them that the options they choose must fit with whatever comes before and after the gap. Therefore, they need to look carefully at features such as linking words, personal pronouns and tenses, to make sure these features in the options fit in with the rest of the text.
Ask students to look at the photo and think about what they can see - they may already know something about the topic (the Northern Lights). Ask them to share any information they have with the rest of the class.
