End the Conversation Politely and with a Smile.
Ending a conversation can be awkward, so it is helpful to know how to do it politely. Say that you have enjoyed meeting the person. Then give a brief reason why you are ending the conversation. Here are some common and acceptable reasons for ending a conversation: to find someone, to use the restroom, to get some food or drink, or to leave the event. In North America, shaking hands is optional in social situations and expected in professional situations. In the United Kingdom, always shake hands when ending a conversation and leaving.
