Who are the British?
'The British Isles' is a geographical term that refers to a group of islands in the Atlantic Ocean off the north-western coast of continental Europe. There are over 6,000 bigger and smaller islands, but only some of them are permanently inhabited. The British Isles are relatively low-lying; the climate is temperate oceanic mainly because of the North Atlantic Drift, which brings significant moisture and warm temperatures to the archipelago. The temperature changes with the seasons, but rarely ever drops below -11 °C in winter or rises above 28 °C in summer.

The biggest of the British Isles are Great Britain, which is also the largest island in Europe, Ireland, Anglesey, the Isle of Man, the Isle of Wight, the Orkneys, the Hebrides, the Shetlands, and the Isles of Scilly. The total area is approximately 315,159 km2, and the combined population is about 70 m people. Two independent states are located on the islands: the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly known as the UK, and Ireland, or the Republic of Ireland. The Isle of Man and two islands in the English Channel, Guernsey and Jersey, are the so-called Crown Dependencies: they do not form part of the UK or Ireland, but are not independent states either.
