Academic Vocabulary in Use, McCarthy M., O’Dell F., 2008

Academic Vocabulary in Use, McCarthy M., O’Dell F., 2008.

The book presents and practises the kind of vocabulary that is used in academic speech and writing regardless of which discipline you are concerned with. So it considers words and expressions like concept, cast doubt on, put forward a theory and come to a conclusion. It does not deal with the specialist vocabulary of any particular subject such as medicine or physics. Such specialist terms are often relatively easy to master - they will be explained and taught as you study the subject and these words may indeed sometimes be similar in English and your own language. However, it is the more general words used for discussing ideas and research and for talking and writing about academic work that you need to be fully familiar with in order to feel comfortable in an academic environment. Despite the fact that they are much more frequent than specialist words, these more general words are often felt to be more difficult to learn. It is, therefore, extremely useful to approach them in the systematic way suggested by this book.

English Vocabulary in Use, Advanced Book with Answers, Vocabulary Reference and Practice, O’Dell F., McCarthy М., 2017

English Vocabulary in Use, Advanced Book with Answers, Vocabulary Reference and Practice, O’Dell F., McCarthy М., 2017.

This book has been written to help you expand your vocabulary at the advanced level. You already know thousands of English words, but to express yourself fully and in a sophisticated way at the advanced level, you will ideally need between 6,000 and 8,000 words, so increasing your vocabulary is very important for your general progress in English, as well as for any academic, professional or vocational needs you may have where English plays an important role. At the advanced level, as well as learning new words, you will need to learn more about the subtle connotations of words, aspects of register and style and how words combine into collocations, compounds and fixed phrases. In this book, there are over 3,000 new words and expressions for you to learn. You will find them on the left-hand page of each unit. Every new word or phrase is used in a sentence, or in a conversation, or is in a table, or has a picture with it, or has some explanation of what it means. On the right-hand page there are exercises and other activities to help you practise using the words and to help you to remember them. Where our research shows that learners frequently make errors, we give you advice on how to avoid the most common ones, as well as other useful language tips. The book has been written so that you can use it yourself, without a teacher. You can do the units in any order you like, but we have grouped them into themes, so you might wish to work through several units on a particular area of vocabulary before moving to a new one.

Grammar for business, McCarthy M., McCarten J., Clark D., Clark R., 2012.

The authors wish to thank the many people who have been involved in making this book. First, we would like to thank our editor, Lynn Townsend, who steered us and the book through its long journey from the first drafts to the book you have in front of you. Lynn's views were always helpful, creative and insightful. She was patient when the project suffered the inevitable delays that happen for a variety of reasons and always displayed great good humour. Next, we would like to offer huge thanks to Jessica Errington, our development editor, whose vision as to the ideal shape and content of the units and whose keen eye for detail enabled us to improve our early drafts of the book and to produce this final version. Nora McDonald was also a wonderful editor to work with; she applied her skills and eagle-eyes to the manuscript as it took its final shape. From there on, the production team steered the book through its demanding schedule; Linda Matthews deserves a special thank-you in that respect.

The book has 60 two-page units. The left-hand page presents the collocations that are focused on in the unit. The right-hand page checks that you have understood the information on the left-hand page by giving you a series of exercises that practise the material just presented.
The units are organised into different sections. First we start with important information about collocations in general. Then there are sections looking at grammatical and other special aspects of collocations. The rest of the book deals with collocations that relate to particular topics such as Weather or Business, concepts such as Time or Change and functions such as Agreeing and disagreeing or Liking and disliking.
