When the axe broke one day, Jerry said that he would pay for it. He was sure that it was his fault, that he had broken the axe handle because of his own carelessness.
He did for the author an unnecessary thing. He found a hole beside the fireplace, there he put some wood, so that the author might always have dry fire material ready in case of sudden wet weather.
Jerry once began to speak of things he had not spoken about before, nor had the author dared to ask him. He spoke about his mother who lived, as he said, in Mannville, and who sent him presents.
