   The majority of texts in this reader have been collected from different Somali school books published since the beginning of the 1970’s until today, in Mogadishu and Hargeysa, as well as in Ethiopia. Where necessary, some of the texts have been slightly adapted (orthographically standardised, grammatically or factually corrected, lexically or syntac-tically simplified etc.), and most of the texts have been tone-marked.

   Somali is spoken by more than 25 million people, making it approximately the 10th largest language in Africa and 70th largest in the world. Most Somali speakers live in five states in the Horn of Africa, but there is also a large diaspora that can be found practically all around the world.
